...show me the film of when I was young...
Here is an old VHS video (complete with the old-fashioned hard plastic case) put out by the Trashcan Sinatras' first original label Go! Discs. The tape contained nine total videos -- two each from the Trashcan Sinatras, the La's and The Beautiful South, and three by Beats International. The videos by TCS are "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell". The tape itself is nondescript, no labels, etc., so I felt no need to waste bandwidth by posting photographs of it.
In 1993, Polygram Records produced a promotional VHS tape of videos from several of their artists, including the Trashcan Sinatras (represented here with "Hayfever". I can't find too much information about this collection on the web; obviously this tape is a promo to highlight new releases from Polygram recording artists. Others featured here are the Cranberries, P.J. Harvey and Bob Geldof.
The Trashcan Sinatras' Videos Lost...and Found is a two VHS tape collection of approximately 4 hours of TV appearances, music videos and bootleg recordings from various shows, all from around 1989 to 1996. This is a great collection to browse through, with plenty of unique and highly entertaining performances. This collection also contains the full-length (~15 minutes) Spooktime film at the end of the "found" tape. |
One of the Holy Grails of collecting Trashcanucopia, Spooktime is a roughly 15 minute film by John McFarlane that features the Trashcan Sinatras as a bar band performing in a pub. The idea behind it was that instead of making song videos to promote their third album A Happy Pocket, they would make a short film, perform snippets of some of the songs of the album, and populate it with a few of the songs' characters. This VHS cassette is definitely one of the rarest collectibles from the Trashcans.
Here is a VHS tape of the music videos played in the HMV music stores between October 2004 and January 2005. Several of these instore VHS tapes were made, each covering a three month period of time, helping to promote the music sold in the HMV stores. There is a wide range of musical acts on this particular tape, including Mick Jagger, K.D. Lang, Kenny G, Whitney Houston and R.E.M. The Trashcan Sinatras are represented with "Hayfever" from the I've Seen Everything album. |
In 2004, after a prolonged absence from touring in the US, the Trashcan Sinatras performed two shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Centered around the recording and release of their fourth album Weightlifting, these highly anticipated shows were videotaped and released on this DVD entitled Trashcan Sinatras - Midnight at the Troubadour. The two shows were on March 16th and October 8th of 2004. In addition to the Troubadour shows, included are three songs that were done live in studio in L.A. on the KCRW radio show Morning Become Eclectic, hosted by Nic Harcourt. Anytime I need a live show fix from TCS, putting this DVD in the player does the trick.
As with the Go! Discs and Polygram tapes shown above, in 2005 spinART Records produced a similar promotional recording, this time with the more modern use of DVD instead of VHS tape. The Trashcan Sinatras, now part of the spinART lineup, are featured on this DVD with a live performance of "It's a Miracle" (performed on radio station KCRW in Los Angeles). This video version is the same one that is on the DVD disc of the Weightlifting album, Deluxe Edition.
