Other Trashcan Sinatras Recordings
...I'm on a b road heading for the sea...
"On a B Road" is a 2 CD collection of b-sides, cover songs, and other recordings that never made it onto any official album. The title is taken from a lyric of Cake's "Maybe I Should Drive" and refers to a "lesser" road, i.e. not a main highway. This is the original release of this collection; directly below is a re-release of "On a B Road" with mostly the same songs (with a few exceptions). This original version does not have commentary in the liner notes (unlike the re-release).

Pictured below is the re-release of the Trashcan Sinatras' b-sides / cover songs collection "On a B Road". As mentioned above in the notes to the original release, this collection is only slightly different in musical content (42 songs vs. 46 for the original), but it has interesting notes from band members regarding the songs, something that was unfortunately not included in the original album.

This 17-song live CD was recorded from two acoustic shows (November 23rd and 25th, 2009) at the Brel Bar and Restaurant in Glasgow, Scotland.
Among the songs on this CD are two that deserve note: "Astronomy", which was officially recorded as an extra track on the Japanese version of In the Music, and "Hammertime", a rarely heard song that was the b-side of the 10" vinyl single release of "All the Dark Horses". |
In 2005, the Trashcan Sinatras performed two stripped-down accoustic shows at Fez, a music club in New York City. Portions of these performances are reproduced here in this album of the same name (Fez, that is). One of the highlights is a the rarely heard song "In Capitals", sung by John Douglass, which is an extra track on the Japanese version of Weightlifting.
There are three versions of this album shown below (US, UK and Japan).

This double CD showcases three live performances spanning the years 1993 through 1996, (Queens College, UK, 1993, and two shows at Club Quattro, Tokyo, 1996). Featuring live versions of all of the songs from I've Seen Everything and A Happy Pocket, most of the songs on Cake, as well as a few extras, this compilation is a treasure-trove of TCS music. Note the bloody depiction on the CD's cover of what can happen if one actually chews on a brick.

A very difficult to find compilation of "greatest hits" from the Trashcan Sinatras canon that was given out to radio stations presumably to aid in choosing TCS songs to play. As the liner notes say, "Here is a collection of 24 of their best songs re-mastered and given nip-tuck polishing to shine anew on the radio."
One of the hardest items that I've ever had to try to obtain, I finally was able to get this through a Japanese auction site. This is the CD single for "Town Foxes", an old recording done by the Trashcan Sinatras back in the I've Seen Everything days (1993-ish). Coupled with the TCS version is a cover by the Japanese pop-group Sunny Day Service. Both renditions are excellent; both bands offer their own unique signature styles to the song.
This CD was made in very limited supply (500 copies I've been told)--it was only given out to attendees of the Trashcan Sinatras shows in Japan during their tour there in March 2010. |
Radio Sessions Volumes 1 and 2 are compilations of recordings that were made during visits by the Trashcan Sinatras to various radio stations for album and tour promotion purposes. The blue one is Volume 1; the green one is Volume 2.
Similar to the radio sessions CDs shown above, the Acoustic Sessions 7" vinyl EP is a recording of a radio session done in Japan in September of 1996. Considered an unofficial release, this recording is quite rare. The Trashcans perform "The Safecracker", "Obscurity Knocks" and "How Can I Apply...?".
In 1992, the Trashcan Sinatras did a cover of the XTC single "Senses Working Overtime", which was given out as a freebie at a show TCS performed at King Tuts in Glasgow. The song also subsequently appeared on the TCS b-sides / rarities album On a B Road. The b-side on this 12" vinyl is "For the Meantime".
Since this was a giveaway at a gig, I don't suppose more than a few hundred of these were made. The one I have is number 14, which is said to be more valuable due to the relatively low number--I'm not exactly sure why that is the case. Maybe the first pressings are better quality than the later ones? Or is it just psychological? Who knows... |
Around the time of the release of Weightlifting, John Douglas of the Trashcan Sinatras wrote a simple but very beautiful song called "Wild Mountainside". It evoked such a reverent feeling towards the Scotland countryside that to many people, it sounded like it could have been a cover of an old Scottish folk ballad a la Robert Burns, generally known as the national poet of Scotland and its "favourite son". In fact, the Trashcans' Frank Reader's sister Eddi included it in her thematic album Eddi Reader Sings the Songs of Robert Burns (audio here).
Two release of this CD single were made: One from Picnic Records (left side) and another from Bobame Recordings (right side). There are small differences, such as the size and positioning of the cover font, the Picnic CD label is very nondescript, and the back cover is laid out a bit different. Check out the weird design extending out from the top of the barcode of the Picnic version.

This 2 CD collection contains 41 demo recording / alternate takes of songs, recorded between 1986 and 1997. These songs include those that made it on their first three albums Cake, I've Seen Everything and A Happy Pocket, as well as songs that were b-sides to singles or were unreleased altogether. This album was compiled in the van pictured on the cover, as unfortunate economic circumstances required the relinquishing of their studio Shabby Road, and the subsequent re-location of their audio equipment to this aforementioned vehicle.
This compilation was also put together to assist in raising funds for the recording of their fourth album, Weightlifting.

The entertainment company Live Nation Entertainment used to provide a recording service called Instant Live. The idea was to record shows from one of their fleet of Instant Live recording vans, and then provide digital live copies to anyone interested in obtaining one soon after the show.
In May of 2005, the Trashcan Sinatras played such a show at Slim's in San Francisco. This 2 CD collection is a recording of that performance. |
The Five Hungry Joes CD - a very rare recording that was given out to fans by request after a box of said CDs were left on the doorstep of one of the TCS internet message board members. Apparently, there were only 150 of these CDs made. It appears that this five-song CD was a promo before the release of the Trashcan's third album A Happy Pocket.
This non-descript CD (no label or liner notes whatsoever) consists of five songs, one sung by each of the band members: 1. "No Gasoline" - Frank Reader 2. "Mr. Grisly" - Stephen Douglas 3. "Aberration" - Davy Hughes 4. "A Boy and A Girl" - John Douglas 5. "I Must Fly" - Paul Livingston |
