Compilations
...it’s taking on epic proportions before my weary eyes...
Below are several compilation albums that the Trashcan Sinatras have appeared on. Clicking on the following links will take you directly to my photos of the compilation album listed, along with brief commentary...
This hard to find compilation was produced by the French cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles (the title of the magazine is a play on Les Incorruptibles, which is the French name for the US television show The Untouchables).
The magazine periodically produced compilation albums, some of which featured the Trashcan Sinatras -- other examples are displayed further down this page. This particular volume contains "Oranges and Apples", but erroneously gives writing credit to Syd Barrett. The song is an homage to Syd; he didn't write it. Perhaps they were confused with the song that Syd Barrett did write (as a member of early Pink Floyd) -- "Apples and Oranges". Oh, well.... |
T in the Park is a Scottish music festival sponsored by the brewing company Tennents (hence the "T" in the festival name). This compilation is a three CD set, each CD covering highlights of the festival for either 1994, 1995 or 1996. Further down is the same collection, but released as a three LP set.
The Trashcan Sinatras are represented on the 1995 CD/LP (#2) with the song "Twisted and Bent" from A Happy Pocket.

The Best of Three in the Park (3 12" vinyl LPs)
Pictured here is the version of Three in the Park that contains 3 vinyl 12" LP records instead of the CDs. Somewhere out there is a 3 cassette tape version as well...

The Album Network was a music industry trade magazine, now defunct. They were prolific producers of compilation albums featuring (mostly) alternative music. The Trashcan Sinatras appear on this album as well as a few other Album Network compilations (see below).
My copy of this compilation album released in 1991 is pretty ratty looking--looks like the previous owner may have been listening to this in the shower judging by the wrinkled once-wet-now-dry look of the cover sheet. I'll need to find a better quality copy. The Trashcan Sinatras are represented here with "Obscurity Knocks" (Track 10) |
The Trashcan Sinatras song "Weightlifting" is featured on this 2004 compilation that was produced by the editors of Word Magazine. Word was a British music magazine published between 2003 and 2012. The CD was a freebie as part of Issue 21. As written in the liner notes, "This latest CD has been made up of material that various members of the team are genuinely enthused about."
It's a very subtle touch, but I like the way the statement at the top of the cover ("In smoky autumnal STEREO for your listening pleasure") harkens back to the sort of design/statement that would often be put on LPs in the early "stereophonic" days of the late '50s / early '60s.

This two CD compilation is a production of the PolyGram TV record label. Not long before the 1997 release of this compilation, PolyGram TV had bought a majority stake in the Go! Discs label, the outfit that signed the Trashcan Sinatras--hence there inclusion in this set (PolyGram TV has since been gobbled up by Universal Music TV, or UMTV. Such is the harsh predatory nature of the recording industry).
On Crush, the Trashcan Sinatras perform their cover of "To Sir, With Love" (from A Happy Pocket). The song is in place 39 out of the total 40 songs on this set (the pentultimate song on CD 2), which I'm not sure is a good thing, but it helps finish up the album in strong fashion. The cover of the album cleverly depicts a crushed sweet tart candy, with the notation at the bottom stating that the album contains "40 sweet and sour tracks..." |
I had a difficult time obtaining this compilation--it required several phone calls to KDHX 88.1 FM in St. Louis, Missouri to see if they had a copy. The songs on Live at KDHX 88.1 FM, No. 8 were recorded in their studios during live broadcasts sometime before the release of the compilation in 2010. Unfortunately, when I had made the call, they weren't sure if they had any more No. 8 CDs, as they had already made No. 9 and that was the record that they were promoting at that moment. Also, I was informed that these CDs were typically given away to patrons of the station during pledge drives (KDHX is a non-commericial listener-supported station). Luckily, they were eventually able to locate a copy and were willing to sell it at a reasonably low price without me having to become a member of the KDHX community (not that that's a bad thing, but I live 2,000 miles away).
In this volume, The Trashcan Sinatras perform a live version of "I Hung My Harp Upon the Willows" from In the Music. |
CFNY-FM 102.1 ("The Edge") is a Canadian radio station (from Toronto), specializing in the alternative/modern rock format. Free at Last, advertised as "the essential alternative sampler", appears to be a joint collaboration between CFNY-FM, HMV (the British retailing conglomerate), and PolyGram Records of Canada. There have been several Free at Last compilations, two of which contain a Trashcan Sinatras tune (the other compilation appears farther below).
For this compilation, the producers chose to use a Trashcan Sinatras song that is not among the more commonly chosen songs for these types of compilations--"The Best Man's Fall" (from their debut album Cake). Not a typically used song, but still among the favorites of Trashcan Sinatras fans.

A Scottish community college project (Ayr College), The Sound of Purple compilation album brought together 17 songs from several local Scotland bands. One of these bands was the Cat Protection League, an alter ego of the Trashcan Sinatras (analogous to XTC posing as the Dukes of Stratosphear several years back). The band members were evidently suckers for stray felines that would wander by their studio, so the new name stuck--at least for the song released only on this CD, "Duty Free".
The name Purple Records is evidently a name derived by the Ayr College crew responsible for putting together this compilation, not to be confused with the record label of the same name that was put together by the management of the '70s rock band Deep Purple. |
Go! Discs was the recording company that first signed the Trashcan Sinatras. Here is a compilation put out by that label that highlights many selections from Go! Discs "stable of stars", including songs from the La's, the Beautiful South, and of course, the Trashcan Sinatras. The Trashcans are represented here with two songs, "Obscurity Knocks" and "I've Seen Everything".
The version of the CD that I own is a cardboard digipak/like case, with a black soft plastic border. There's a black clip that opens up the case. Interestingly, there is a version of this compilation album that comes in standard jewel box packaging (Courtesy of the Five Hungry Joes website).

KEXP 90.3 FM is a public radio station in Seattle, Washington. Its programming is mainly alternative and indie pop/rock. The station would frequently host in-studio performances of alternative rock artists, many of which became included on their Live at KEXP compilation albums. The one pictured here, Live at KEXP Volume Two, contains the Trashcan Sinatras' song "Weightlifting".

Afternoon Tea is a Japanese shop/cafe specializing in providing the luxury and relaxation of the English afternoon tea tradition. Here is a compilation album put out by Afternoon Tea that provides the sort of music that caters to this sort of relaxing tea drinking culture.
This very difficult to find compilation has a drink coaster in the center of the front cover that can be punched out, presumably so one can enjoy the orange iced tea so prominently mentioned in the album's title. "How Can I Apply...?" is the Trashcan Sinatras' selection on this album.

Escape is a Greek fitness and lifestyle magazine, with this CD being an apparent giveaway promotion with the sale of one of the issues. The Trashcan Sinatras are featured performing "I've Seen Everything" from their album of the same name.
I was going to write something snarky about the snowboarder on the CD cover and the lack of a snowy climate in Greece, until I found out that in northern Greece, there are harsh snowy winters and plenty of fine skiing. Who knew? |
As mentioned earlier up the page, The Album Network was a music industry trade magazine, now defunct. They were prolific producers of compilation albums featuring (mostly) alternative music. The Trashcan Sinatras appear on this album ("Obscurity Knocks") as well as on a few other Album Network compilations, shown elsewhere on this page.
I get a kick out of the caricature of the 50's style bongo-playing beatnik artist depicted on this volume. |
A two CD set put out by the Scottish Arts Council, In a Big Country showcases Scottish artists that either performed at the South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas in 2004 or were invited but could not attend due to previous commitments (CD1), or are up-and-coming artists that could be performing at the next SXSW festival in 2005 (CD2). As it says in the gatefold for CD2, "Watch Out Next Year, SXSW".
The Trashcan Sinatras were performers at the SXSW 2004 festival, so are featured on CD1 with "All the Dark Horses". |
This promotional give-away CD was free with the purchase of the Scottish newspaper Scotland on Sunday sometime in 2004 (exact Sunday issue unknown). The Trashcan Sinatras are here along with several other Scottish artists, and are represented with the song "Weightlifting" from their album of the same name.
|
The Sunday Times is a British Sunday newspaper that has a separate Scottish version. This CD, like other similar ones on this page, was a promotional giveaway with the purchase of the newspaper.
This CD is a compilation of artists that performed at various Scottish music festivals in 2007. The Trashcan Sinatras' "Leave Me Alone" from the album Weightlifting is track #3 on this collection. The selection of this track is interesting as "Leave Me Alone" was not one of their singles and is not a common choice for compilations of this type. |
Another example of a free CD promotional giveaway from a newspaper. The newspaper in this case is The Guardian, a British daily publication. FCD (Free Compact Disc) is a 2004 compilation containing just six songs, one of which is "Weightlifting" from the Trashcan Sinatras.
|
....And yet another free insert CD from a newspaper, this time from the Sunday newspaper Scotland on Sunday. This 2010 compilation captures 14 Scottish artists, one of which is the Trashcan Sinatras with their selection "Morning Star", a seldom performed song either live or on compilations such as this. I've always like this song with it's riff that sounds very much like that of the 6-string Fender bass solo in Glen Campbell’s rendition of “Wichita Lineman” by Jimmy Webb. In fact, the working title of this song was “The Jimmy Webb Song”.
|
This very difficult to find CD compilation was produced in Paris by POPnews, a French internet webzine specializing in the independent music scene. Four compilations were produced, of which the one pictured below is #2. The compilations feature rare or unreleased songs, and with the Trashcan Sinatras on POPvolume#2, this is no exception--the selection is "In Capitals", the studio version of which only appears elsewhere as an extra track on the Japanese issue of their fourth album Weightlifting. However, a live version of "In Capitals" appears on the live album Fez.
It's a little confusing, but this compilation features many of the PolyDor recording label's artists from the UK, but the CD was produced in Japan (through the Japanese division PolyDor K.K.).
The Trashcan Sinatras have back-to-back songs on this album, songs #4 and #5 "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell", both from their first album Cake. |

Westwood One is a radio network company specializing in syndicated radio shows, often music-oriented--On the Edge is but one example. This CD is a recording from Show # 93-28 broadcast on the Westwood One Radio Networks for the weekend of July 10, 1993. It's kind of cool as the CD includes programming notes on a separate sheet of paper (below).
The Trashcan Sinatras segment contains "Hayfever", "Only Tongue Can Tell", "Iceberg" and "Remember Phil", the latter of which hadn't yet been changed to it's final release name, "Twisted and Bent". Interspersed between the songs are snippets of interview with the band members. |
Along with On the Edge (see above), The Vault was another music-oriented syndicated radio show broadcasted through the Westwood One Radio Networks. This particular CD is from Show # 97-08 broadcast during the week of February 17, 1997. Included with the CD are two paper sheets: one with programming notes, and other with the transcript from host Jed "The Fish" Gould (also a DJ on legendary Los Angeles alternative music station KROQ-FM).
"Only Tongue Can Tell" is the track from the Trashcan Sinatras on this CD. Remember though--Unauthorized duplication is a "viloation" of applicable laws (see CD photo top-right).

This is one of several compilations put together by the Les Inrockuptibles people that contain songs by the Trashcan Sinatras, in this case the John Douglas' song "Earlies", near the end of disc number one.
Other noteworthy artists on this collection are David Bowie, Roxie Music, Radiohead and Siouxsie & the Banshees. |
Translated from the French: "10 years, 100 songs". This 6 disc box set was produced by the publishers of the French culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles. It was released on 01 January 1997, so presumably the 100 songs included in the compilation covered the years 1987-1996. The Trashcan Sinatras perform "Hayfever" on CD 5.
The front cover of the CD box shows 100 close-up pictures of some of the individuals who are performing on this compilation. Representing the Trashcan Sinatras is vocalist and sometimes guitarist Frank Reader (row 6, column 9). |
In February of 2005, a relief concert was held in Scotland to raise money for the victims of the tragic tsunami that devastated areas of the Indian Ocean in December 2004. The Concert for Tsunami Relief held in Glasgow, which featured various Scottish musical acts such as Franz Ferdinand, Travis, Idlewild, Deacon Blue, and the Trashcan Sinatras, raised over £300,000 for tsunami disaster relief, not including the proceeds for the recording (pictured below).
This three CD set captures the full live experience of the concert. The Trash Can Sinatras perform "All the Dark Horses", "Hayfever" and "Weightlifting".

In 1986, the French cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles developed the idea of a compilation album commemorating the 10th anniversary of the release of the Smith's iconic The Queen is Dead album. They successfully brought together 10 musical artists (including Billy Bragg, The Divine Comedy and Supergrass), each one to perform one of the 10 songs from the album. The result is The Smiths is Dead, on which the Trashcan Sinatras perform the albums third cut, "I Know It's Over".
Displayed below are the regular French-released CD, followed by the Japanese release (complete with obi-strip and special Japanese character liner notes and lyric sheet), a promo version is a simple envelope, and the French cassette version. |
The Smiths is Dead (promo CD)
This promotional version of The Smiths is Dead is just a simple light cardboard envelope with the CD inside. There is no booklet or liner note sheet as with the primary French and the Japanese CD versions of this compilation.
Another difference is a slight reduction of the cover photo's border margins, cutting-off of all four edges of the photo to a slight degree--you can see this especially with the boy's shirt at the bottom of the photo as well as with the CD title at the top right, which is now more flush with the corner. |
The Smiths is Dead (Japanese CD)
Here is the Japanese version of the French-released The Smiths is Dead album shown directly above. I love the Japanese penchant for including "obi strips" on their CDs, the tall and thin paper strips that wrap around the spine of the CD case.
Also included with this version is a separate two-sided sheet with lyrics and liner notes written in Japanese.

The Smiths is Dead (Cassette)
This compilation was a joint effort between the Scottish Arts Council, the Scottish Music Centre, Scottish Development International and the New Music in Scotland (NEMIS) organization. The front cover cleverly satirizes the opening text scroll seen in the Star Wars movies, complete with the slanted deep perspective font and the subtitle of "The Saltire Strikes Back" mimicking "The Empire Strikes Back".
The Trashcan Sinatras provide song #7 on this CD with "Welcome Back", the opening song from their fifth album Weightlifting.

I don't have very much to say about this compilation--there isn't a lot of info on the disc packaging, and the internet isn't much help either. To make matters worse, there is a big library check-out sticker marring the cover; apparently this used to belong to the London Studios (a.k.a. the London Television Centre). What is hiding behind the sticker--which you can see only partially--is a large numeral "3".
What can be gleaned from the packaging is that this compilation is put together by some outfit known as Fine Tunes. Other than that, it's a mystery. They did have some good taste, however, in including "Hayfever" by the Trashcan Sinatras. |
...Similar to the selection directly above, the good albeit anonymous folks who brought you Fine Tunes 3 are back with their next selection, titled (you guessed it) Fine Tunes 4. Again they showed the high class and wisdom to include another TCS song, this time "Only Tongue Can Tell".

FMQB, or Friday Morning Quarterback, is a trade magazine based in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, covering the music and radio industries. They frequently put out compilations of various types of music, this one of "modern rock" released in July 1993 (see directly below for another of their compilations--with TCS representation of course).
The cover is of a mock tabloid newspaper, complete with sensational headlines such as "Man With No Arms Marries Woman With No Legs!" "Bloodrush" by the Trashcan Sinatras is included here as song #11. |
Like the modern rock sampler directly above, this compilation is also put out by the trade magazine FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback). Entitled PAR-Spectives Number Two, this CD gives special thanks to "Bruce Ranes and the staff of the World Cafe". This refers to a Philadelphia radio program on WXPN that plays an eclectic mix of music--also aired nationally throughout the US on National Public Radio (NPR).
This particular compilation was released in the summer of 1993, and includes the Trashcan Sinatras' "Bloodrush". Interesting song placement--"Bloodrush" is sandwiched directly between songs by country stars Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovett. Go figure...

On this double CD compilation, which was apparently produced in Canada, the Trashcan Sinatras perform two songs--"Obscurity Knocks" and "January's Little Joke", the first and last songs from their debut album Cake. The compilation appears to be a showcase for the Polygram stable of recording artists, though I'm not at all clear on what "Just Say Yes to Another Excess" means exactly, nor do I know what the cover is depicting.

Ballads of the Book is a unique compilation released in 2007 which teamed up various Scottish writers and poets with various Scottish musical acts. The idea was that the writers/poets would create poems which would be used as lyrics to songs penned by the collaborating singers/bands. Produced by Chemikal Underground Records, this CD contains a song by the Trashcan Sinatras called "Half an Apple", the lyrics of which were written by the Scottish writer Ali Smith.
Ballads of the Book (Promo CD)
While the regular release of Ballads of the Book (above) contained a CD plus a 30 page booklet, this promo version of the compilation came in a simple cardboard sleeve sans booklet. The back of the promo also had a different layout (below).

The Trashcan Sinatras performed an acoustic version of "The Safecracker" on this CD compilation, which was produced by KDGE 94.5 FM ("The Edge") in Dallas, Texas. The station had a program called The Adventure Club whereby new bands would be showcased. Not sure what the point of the graduation pictures is....

This compilation, titled Free at Last 3, contains the Trashcans' song "Bloodrush" (spelled on this CD as "Blood Rush"). |
One of the Trashcan Sinatras' singles from A Happy Pocket, "To Sir With Love" is represented on a compilation put together by the Disctronics into something called the Tip Sheet. Not sure what this is about as there is very little info on the web regarding this.
. |
Music Matters was a CD compilation put out as a free promo with the sale of Details Magazine ("the modern man's guide to culture, style, entertainment and fitness" as it is billed). In 1993, they produced both a 2 CD (titled Music Matters 5, directly below) and a 1 CD version (titled Music Matters 5 Special Edition, directly below that). The collection of songs on the 1 CD version was a subset of the songs from the 2 CD version, both containing "Hayfever" by the Trashcan Sinatras.
As mentioned directly above, this special edition of Music Matters 5 pictured here was a 1 CD subset of the 2 CD version shown in the photos preceding this compilation. As with the 2 CD set, the Trashcan Sinatras are represented with "Hayfever" from their I've Seen Everything album.
|
This compilation was a very difficult one to find. Even a Google search comes up with very little. Contacting the Patio Music people to see if they had this CD in storage somewhere came up with nothing (though they did try to interest me in some of their other offerings, to no avail). Patience won out as I was finally able to locate a copy. Don't ask me what "Loocee" refers to.
The Trashcan Sinatras are represented here with "All the Dark Horses" from their fourth album Weightlifting. |
Yet another sampler from the folks at Canada's CFNY-FM 102.1, this one is a double cassette collection of songs from artists such as Run DMC, The Beautiful South, The Charlatans UK and Men Without Hats. The Trashcan Sinatras are represented here with "Obscurity Knocks" which wraps up side 3.
This cassette tape-only compilation was released as part of a free promo with the purchase of the May 1996 issue of Select Magazine, a UK music magazine specializing in the "Britpop" genre--in fact, this term was coined by one of the magazine's writers. With such influence on the British music scene, too bad they couldn't get the Trashcan Sinatras' song correct on this compilation--they spelled "Pop Place" incorrectly as "Pop Palace" on the tape and on the case (inside liner notes got it right though).
|
Produced in the Philippines, The Indie Love Songs is a cassette-only compilation from 1998, put out be Polydor, a division of Polygram and the Trashcan's label after acquiring a major stake in Go Discs! before the latter folded. Not much is known about this collection. "How Can I Apply...?" by the Trashcan Sinatras is one of the tracks featured on this collection (song #4 on Side A).
|
British comic strip magazine Deadline Magazine (originators of the Tank Girl strip) put out a compilation in 1992 called Tape Horn, featuring bands such as Inspiral Carpets, Ramones, and The Trashcan Sinatras. The TCS song chosen for this collection is "One at a Time" (from I've Seen Everything), a more heavy type of song than their usual fare, sort of like their contribution to the grunge era. The cassette comes in a simple slip case rather than the standard clear plastic hinged tape case.
"The new route to new music". That is the slogan of New Route Magazine, a New York City music periodical about which I can find very little on the web. They seem to have been around in the late-80's to mid-90's, and evidently created several samplers, of which No. 4 (pictured here) contains "Only Tongue Can Tell" by the Trashcan Sinatras. I'm not too sure about their assessment of the band, however: "...significant interest with countrified folk yearnings of America's heartland". (???)
|
This 12" vinyl record album collection was made in Greece and was released by Polydor/Polygram in 1991. There was also two previous Goodmorning '90s record albums, vol. 1 and vol. 2.
The Cure, The Fall, The La's and The Happy Mondays are among the groups selected for this collection. The Trashcan Sinatras perform "Obscurity Knocks" on this LP, as the final song on Side 2 (closing out the record with a bang). The back of the album states that this compilation has also been released as a cassette. I've never seen this for sale anywhere--I would love to get myself a copy. |
The title of this 12" vinyl compilation is a Portuguese translation of the phrase "new trends". This collection was made in Brazil in 1991 and contains the first Trashcan Sinatras single "Obscurity Knocks". The album has a "Guitar Side (side 1)" where the Trashcans' song is located, and a "Club Side (side 2)", with more dance-oriented music.
The best I can decipher from the internet and the liner notes (though I can't read Portuguese) is that Jose Roberto Mahr, a Brazilian DJ, has put together several compilation albums, of which Novas Tendencias 2 is one of them (there are at least two other Novas Tendencias albums out there--presumably 1 and 3?)

This LP was put out by spinART Records, a New York record company that the Trashcan Sinatras signed with for the recording/release of their fourth album Weightlifting.
The TCS selection for this collection of spinART artists is a live version of "Hayfever". There's very little in the way of information on this LP, so there is no indication exactly what were the circumstances of this live performance. |
