An interesting song, which seems to be about the fears and trials of growing old. "The danger lies in autumn" seems to make the observation that being old ("I know the winter won't be cold") does not cause as much anguish as the process of leaving youth behind and sliding into the unfamiliar territory of old age.
On the Wild Pendulum tour, when playing "Autumn", the Trashcan Sinatras started with the old I've Seen Everything song "Iceberg" as an intro before launching into "Autumn", as the two seem to have similar colder / darker themes. |

One of the songs on Wild Pendulum that is being pushed for radio play is "All Night", a catchy tune that incorporates dance beats along with a sample of "The Lonely Bull" by Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. This sort of sampling is a departure for the Trashcan Sinatras, but it works well on this song.

"Ain't That Something" appears to be a song about Los Angeles, and not a particularly flattering homage to boot ("we are definitely doomed"; "when the lightning strikes / it won't be minute too soon"). With L.A. references such as the Belasco / Follies Theatre, "City of Angels" and the Lantern Festival in Chinatown, it shows a personal relationship with Los Angeles that isn't surprising since two band members (Frank and Paul) have both spent many years living there.
Interspersed in the melody is a very Beach Boys-like bridge with lush harmonies and instrumentation that sounds like it could have come straight out of Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds or SMiLE sessions. |

This was the first song that was released for the listening pleasure of pledge drive members before the release of Wild Pendulum, and a better choice to introduce the album would be hard to come by. A very pleasant and vibrant melody, it ends the several-year drought of no new Trashcan songs and reminds us why we love this band so much.

This trailer was released just prior to the release of Wild Pendulum, serving only to whet everyone's appetite for the new album even more that it already was. The snippets of album cover shots allowed fans to be able to construct the order of the twelve new songs, so even though most of the songs themselves were still unknown, the names of the songs were now appearing to the public for the first time.

A short teaser of "The Neighbours' Place", one of the best songs on Wild Pendulum, albeit just an instrumental track of the song. I've always liked it when the Trashcan Sinatras have veered away from the standard order of the traditional verse-chorus formula, and a listen to the complete song shows how good they are at doing this.

Another instrumental track teaser, this time of "What's Inside the Box". Though not present on this short instrumental sample, I like the lyrical metaphor of the "box inside of me" that contains the hidden person that is often kept secret. Especially poetic is the line "but there's no lock and there's no key".

...And lastly, a short instrumental snippet of "I See the Moon", the last song on Wild Pendulum, and a very fitting way to end the album. This song had been introduced while touring for In the Music, and while I thought the version that was played live was a tad minimalist and on the sleepy side, the studio version displays a more fully produced richer sound without taking anything away from it's inherent beauty.
